Common goal, which crops up all the time when I’m teaching guitar? the goal of joining the band. And let’s face it … ? a great achievement. Being in a band you help? to learn many skills? music that you can not learn on their own. Not to mention? a great way to stay motivated with your guitar practice. />
But here’s the thing. Often guitarists are waiting to get “good enough”, before joining a band. They want to get to a certain level of play, before taking the necessary measures to be in a band. Can you see any problem with that?
On the surface it might seem reasonable “fully prepare yourself.” But for many guitarists, delaying of being in a band? a form of procrastination. And I feel that this procrastination? often caused by fear or self-esteem issues.
Get Good Enough by
guitarists often do not realize that the way to get good enough to be in a band? to join or form a band. The truth? ? that you do not really learn how to be in a band to join one. It ‘s like riding a bike. You do not really start to learn to ride a bike until you start the practice riding a bike!
The nice thing? that being in a band you give? Feedback from real life there? what? need to work. You will find the weak points that did not know you have! And that helps you grow as a musician and guitarist.
For example: when I played about 2 years I joined a speed metal band that was playing a mix of covers and originals. Once I entered I realized that simply do not have the chops to play a few songs. (We were playing some covers of Slayer, who at the time were beyond me). />
So what did I do? I practiced my ass off. And the great thing? that in a few months I have been able to play all the songs that I needed to learn. And I doubt I would have progressed so? quickly if I only practice in my room.
Some simple steps to perform
If you still feel that you are not good enough, then how to do these steps …
Step 1: Define Good. />
Have you actually defined? us? that “good enough”? Otherwise? need to do now … otherwise you could procrastinate forever. For example: Perhaps you might say to yourself when you can play five songs from beginning to end, you are pretty good. Commit to yourself that once you learn the songs, you start looking for a band to join.
Step 2: Start Jamming />
Step 3: Look for music performance courses.
If you live in a big city? there are bound to be some courses in music performance. These are usually run by experienced musicians, and are designed to give people the real life experience of playing in a band. Such courses are a great way to build trust.
